Program outline
This program aims to prepare graduates eligible for registration as nurses in Queensland, who are competent in the delivery of comprehensive nursing care in a variety of settings and who are motivated towards on-going professional development. Graduates are employed in hospitals, doctors' surgeries, operating theatres, intensive care and palliative care courses, mental health, and community settings. The program includes practicums in Years 2 and 3, which are undertaken in a clinical environment. The cost of accommodation and travel for clinical practicum is the responsibility of the individual student.
^There has been a collaborative arrangement made between the University of the Sunshine Coast (USCDS) and CQU for the delivery of this program on-site at USC (2004 - Year 1 and 2 only).
Career options
Registered nurses work in the health care industry and health promotion agencies, including occupational health, Aboriginal health, community health, drug and alcohol agencies, the armed services, public and private hospitals and nursing homes.
Program structure
To satisfy the requirements of the award, students must complete 24 courses or 144 units of credit as outlined below.
Recommended study schedule
The following schedule is designed for full-time students who usually enrol in four courses per term or 24 units of credit. Part-time students should therefore modify this schedule to suit their own needs The normal study load for part-time students is two courses per term or 12 units of credit per term.

Practicum/work placement
Students are expected to complete practicum placements from Level 2 (Autumn Term) through to Level 3 (Winter Term). At least one out of town placement is to be expected each term.
Enrolled Nurse entry
The program's flexibility will suit enrolled nurses, and recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis. Contact the Program Advisor.
Course requirements
- Students are required to hold a current First Aid certificate from an organisation recognised by the Australian Resuscitation Council by the end of Year 1.
- Evidence of Hepatitis B vaccination is required before commencing Clinical Practice in Year 2.
- A level of computer literacy is required including word processing and email.
Absence from clinical practice
Please refer to the Nursing & Health Studies Guide for Students for policy on absence from Clinical Practice. Please note: Make up for missed clinical practicum will be held in Rockhampton or Bundaberg. Students must be prepared to travel for make-up time.
Application for credit transfer
Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been successfully completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.
