EFTSL Equivalent full time student load EFTSL is a measure of study load over a year, for a student undertaking a program of study on a full-time basis. The EFTSL value of a course is a fraction of one EFTSL as determined by the University.
Duration This is the minimum time required to complete the degree in either full-time, part-time, or distance education mode.
Mode and Location This denotes in which modes of study the program is available and at which CQU campus the student is able to study the program. In some instances, programs may be started at one campus, but students may be required to complete at Rockhampton or as an external student.
Internal Study conducted where there is a need to regularly attend a class(es) on campus. This mode of study may or may not involve some instruction through paper-based, external or online mediums.
External Principally paper-based external study conducted where there is no need to regularly attend class(es) on campus. This mode of study may or may not involve some instruction through irregular face-to-face (e.g. residential workshops), online or other instruction (i.e. teleconference).
Multi-modal Where a student may enrol in different modes of study for each course (i.e. internal mode for one course and external mode for another). For the purposes of offering into a program, students may only be made offers in the internal or external mode. Students offered into a program internally, are permitted to undertake the program in multi-modal mode of attendance. Students offered into a program externally are only permitted to undertake the program in an external mode of attendance.
Online Study is conducted 100% online and there is no need to regularly attend class(es) on campus.
Units of Credit (uc)

This term refers to the minimum value of a course. It is used to:

  • provide students with a guide to the amount of work a course may involve
  • indicate a student's enrolment load
  • define the requirements for an award in the program structure
  • quantify the recognition of any credit for prior study or learning
  • assist in the calculation of a student's weighted grade-point-average (WGPA), and
  • indicate the progress of a student towards completion of an award.

One unit of credit equates to an expectation of approximately two hours of student work per week in a term and is the minimum credit value completion requirement for eligibility to graduate. For example, six credit points has an expectation of approximately 48 hours of student work per week. This work may be made up of but not limited to: lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, assignment work, and self study.
Faculty

An academic organisational unit comprising several schools that is responsible for the administration of programs, usually in related discipline areas. The Dean is the head of a Faculty.

The faculties are:

  • Faculty of Arts, Health & Sciences (FAHS)
  • Faculty of Business & Law (BUSLAW)
  • Faculty of Education & Creative Arts (EdCA)
  • James Goldston Faculty of Engineering & Physical Systems (JGFEPS)
  • Faculty of Informatics & Communication (INFOCOM).
Entry - Central Queensland Campuses Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Mackay, Gladstone, Emerald campuses - application through QTAC. International students wishing to attend these campuses should apply directly to the University through CQU International. International students currently completing Queensland Senior or another Australian Year 12 qualification, either in Australia or overseas, may make an application to QTAC.
Entry - International Campuses Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast, Fiji campuses - application is made directly to the campus at which you wish to study.
Accreditation This term applies to programs that are reviewed at given intervals by the organisations representing professions. Programs meeting the standard will be accredited by that professional body resulting in students who complete an accredited award being eligible to apply for membership (at differing levels) of the body and entry to the profession. Further training before gaining full membership may be required. Examples are the Australian Computer Society accrediting various awards of the Faculty of Informatics and Communication and the Australian Association of Social Workers accrediting the Bachelor of Social Work degree.
Practicum/Work Placement A number of programs, especially those accredited by professional bodies, require students to undertake work experience relevant to the profession. Details of any such experience are included in the program structure and published on the University's web site and in the Student Handbook. May be called Practicum, Work Placement or Work Experience.
Residential School This denotes the residential school requirements of a particular program. In many instances, this is dependent upon courses selected, and students are advised to consult the Residential School Timetable and Table of Course Availability to ensure that there are no clashes. Students are responsible for any costs incurred.
Exit Awards An award that may be available to students unable to fulfil the requirements of the program for which they enrolled. Where such as award exists, students may apply to the Dean to withdraw from their current program and graduate with the appropriate exit award.
Interim Awards An interim award is an award given to a student upon completion of a component of a degree program, while still remaining enrolled within the original degree program.

International Students A University student who is enrolled in a course of study at Central Queensland University and is not:
  • an Australian citizen
  • a New Zealand citizen
  • a person entitled to stay in Australia, or to enter and stay in Australia, without any time limitation or
  • a diplomatic or consular representative of New Zealand or staff member of staff or family relative of such a representative.
CQU CRICOS Provider & Codes

Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Approved providers of education and the programs they offer to international students are allocated a CRICOS code and recorded in the register.

As a provider of international education, CQU must register with Federal and State governments. Both the University and its programs must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
