Bachelor of Education (Music) CQ52

Duration: 4 years full-time.
Mode: Internal only.

Accreditation: Graduates of this course are eligible for provisional registration with the Queensland Board of Teacher Registration. Full registration is gained following the equivalent of 12 months’ successful, full-time teaching.
Practicum/Work Placement: 100 days of Fieldwork must be undertaken. Fieldwork is undertaken at the student’s expense. 80 days will be completed in schools working with registered teachers, and a further 20 with children in an educational setting.

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Education (Music) provides graduates with qualifications as a primary school music specialist and as a generalist primary school teacher.The course combines substantial studies in education with extended studies in music and has been recognised by Education Queensland and other employing authorities such as the Catholic Education Office, for placement as specialist music teachers in schools.

Entry

A curriculum vitae with a statement of studies and experience in music should be sent to the Faculty of Education & Creative Arts at the beginning of November in the year prior to commencing the course.A Sound Achievement in English is required, and students should have prior experience in and knowledge of music through having studied a minimum of one of the following:

  • an instrument(s) through a school instrumental program or private tuition
  • music as a board subject to Year 12
  • a sound achievement or equivalent in Music practical ability on at least one instrument or voice.

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements but who consider they have an appropriate musical background and experience may apply for entry into this course by writing to the Dean of the Faculty of Education & Creative Arts enclosing a current curriculum vitae.

Students who have successfully completed the equivalent of a full-time first year of a music degree at this or another recognised university, may apply for advanced standing of one year.Registered teachers with a musical background may apply for entry. On the successful completion of one year full-time internal study (8 music courses) they will be eligible for the award of BEd (Music).
