Handbook Terminology:

Criterion-referenced assessment

The process of judging and grading student achievement by comparing the quality of the work submitted against a set of specified criteria related to the desired learning outcomes of a course. Because criteria-referenced judgements are in principle made independently for each student rather than by comparison with the quality of work of the other students in the course, the judgements represent absolute rather than relative decisions. Each grade is assigned as a measure of the extent to which the learning outcomes of the course have been achieved.
