Program outline
The aim of the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health & Safety is to prepare professionals working in industry and community services in advanced aspects of occupational health & safety.
On completion of the program, students will be able to:
- identify and anticipate health and safety hazards in the workplace and recommend a systematic approach for their assessment and control;
- utilise knowledge from specialised disciplines in the application of effective prevention and control programs in the workplace;
- demonstrate effective consultation and communication processes in ways which make appropriate use of managerial and industrial frameworks and the social context of the workplace;
- analyse the implications of political, economic, sociological and technological trends on workplace health and safety practices;
- promote a safe and healthy workforce through provision of education and information programs.

To satisfy the requirements of the award, students must complete seven courses or 48 units of credit as outlined below:

#Students completing these courses may be eligible to exit with Graduate Certificate OHS.
Check the details
- a 3 year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline from an Australian university together with at least 2 years of professional work experience;
- a certificate or diploma in a relevant industrial or professionally related field with at least three year's work experience in an occupational helath and safety field; or
- other qualifications deemed equivalent to any one of the above.
In exceptional cases, entry is available as a result of other educational and professional prior learning. Students who gain entry via this alternative approach are expected to enter the program with the skills and ability to:
- write academic papers;
- read and analyse academic literature, government policy texts and detailed reports;
- complete numeracy tasks (eg. secondary school level and/or numeracy applicable to business situations.
Application for credit transfer
Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been successfully completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption. For more information contact the program administrator.
Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
If for some reason a student is unable to complete the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety they can exit with an Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (CU88). To be eligible you must have successfully completed the following courses: OCHS20020, OCHS20021, OCHS20018 and OCHS20019. Students must satisfy the normal prerequisites that apply to their courses. There is no entry to this program. Students must enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety to be eligible to exit with an Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
Residential School
The compulsory residential school runs over a two week period.
There is an integrated residential school for the following courses, OCHS20019, OCHS20020, and OCHS20021.
Students must have completed OCHS20020 and OCHS20021 with a grade of PO (Practicum Outstanding) and be currently enrolled in or passed OCHS20019 to be eligible to attend the final week of the two week residential school for OCHS20022.
NOTE: OCHS20022 is a spring/summer course, but students are required to enrol before the residential school to obtain the required study materials and prepare for the second week of residential school.
