Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) CK01

Duration: 4 years full-time, 8 years part-time.
Mode and Location: Internal only - R.
Courses/Units of Credit: 32 courses/192 units of credit.
Faculty: Arts, Health & Sciences; Education & Creative Arts.
Entry: QTAC.
Accreditation: Graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Queensland Board of Teacher Registration. Full registration is gained following the equivalent of 12 months successful, full-time teaching.
Practicum/Work Placement: 100 days of fieldwork, 80 of which is under the supervision of BTR registered teachers.

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a combined degree for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching with specialisation in secondary education. It provides students with the opportunity to develop as professional teachers through a comprehensive tertiary program and extensive practical experience in schools and the community. This program enables preservice teachers to prepare themselves to teach in a range of secondary education curriculum areas including:

  • English;
  • Drama;
  • History;
  • Geography; and/or
  • Japanese to Year 12.

Curriculum subject areas are offered depending on availability of appropriate curriculum studies in the discipline degree and the availability of pedagogical studies in the Education degree.

Graduates are eligible to apply for teaching positions with employers including Education Queensland, Catholic Education and independent schools.

Program Structure

To satisfy the requirements of the award, students must complete 32 courses or 192 units of credit as outlined below.

Bachelor of Arts Strand

Students must select a course of study that includes 2 approved plans and a minor from within the core studies plans of the Bachelor of Arts program.

A plan consists of 6 courses, with at least 4 of these courses being at advanced level.

  • Geography

  • Japanese Language
  • Literary & Cultural Studies

By carefully selecting courses, students are able to obtain 16 courses of study (3 teaching areas) that can be linked to 3 secondary education curriculum areas.

Students will select courses according to the rules for the Bachelor of Arts program and are advised to do so in consultation with the Bachelor of Arts program advisor.

Students selecting Japanese as one of their 2 teaching areas will be required to take a proficiency test prior to entering the course as well as at the beginning of the second and third years of the course to ensure that they are achieving the required standard of proficiency to be eligible for employment as Japanese teachers.

Students intending to apply for teaching positions in the private sector may be required to show evidence of studies in religion.

Students enrolling in this program should consult the Program advisor no later than Orientation Week.

Application for Credit Transfer

Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.
