Program aim

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Learning Management (Secondary) is a double degree for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching with specialisation in secondary education. (See the Student Dictionary for definition of a double degree, available from http://www.cqu.edu.au/students/index.htm). It provides students with the opportunity to develop as professional teachers through a comprehensive tertiary program and extensive practical experience in schools and the community. This program enables preservice teachers to prepare themselves to teach in a range of secondary education curriculum areas including:

Curriculum subject areas are offered depending on availability of appropriate curriculum studies in the discipline degree and the availability of pedagogical studies in the Education degree.

Graduates are eligible to apply for teaching positions with employers including Education Queensland, Catholic Education and independent schools.

Bachelor of Arts Strand

To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts component of the BA/BLM award, students must complete 18 courses or 108 units of credit as outlined below:

Students will select courses according to the rules for the Bachelor of Arts program and are advised to do so in consultation with the Bachelor of Arts program advisor. By carefully selecting courses, students are able to obtain 18 courses of study (3 teaching areas) that can be linked to 3 secondary education curriculum areas.

Students selecting Japanese as one of their 2 teaching areas will be required to take a proficiency test prior to entering the course as well as at the beginning of the second and third years of the course to ensure that they are achieving the required standard of proficiency to be eligible for employment as Japanese teachers. Students intending to apply for teaching positions in the private sector may be required to show evidence of studies in religion. Students enrolling in this program should consult the Program Advisor no later than Orientation Week. Please note that although the program is only offered internally, some BA courses are available in the distance mode.

Diploma of Arts

If for some reason a student is unable to complete the full Bachelor of Arts, they can exit with Diploma of Arts. To be eligible you must have successfully completed 8 courses or 48 credit points within the Bachelor of Arts (CA10). Four of the 8 courses or 24 credit points must come from the Core Studies Plans of the BA. The other four can be electives chosen from any other program at CQU, or from credit for previous studies. Students must satisfy the normal prerequisites that apply to their courses.

There is no entry to this program. Students must enrol in the Bachelor of Arts and formally apply to graduate with an Diploma of Arts.

What is a Core Studies Plan?

A plan is made up of 6 courses (36 units of credit) from the same discipline. Normally, at least four of these six must be at Advanced level. Most students complete two Level 1 and four Advanced courses, although some complete one Level 1 and five Advanced. In some plans, both Level 1 courses are required to be completed.

Students may choose their core studies plans from (students should consult with Faculty Program Advisors before making their choices):

Liberal Studies

The Liberal Studies Plan provides students with an opportunity to design their own plan by selecting 36 units of credit (ie. 2 Level 1 and no less than 4 Advanced Level) from the Core Studies Plans of the Bachelor of Arts. This will allow students the flexibility to pursue a study stream that suits their interests whilst enabling them to offer the Plan as one of the required Plans for the Bachelor of Arts strand. Students must meet the usual pre and co-requisites for these courses. (Please note that the courses must be from the Core Studies Plans in the Bachelor of Arts degree and that the courses selected from this plan may not be selected for any other plan in the BA).

Drama

Students electing to take drama as part of their studies in the BA/BLM should complete two separate and complete plans from the core studies of the BA, and take the liberal studies plan as their third plan. Students may select up to four courses from the Bachelor of Performing Arts program, and two courses from the Literary Cultural Studies Plan. This will fulfil the requirements of a Liberal Studies Plan for Dram students only.

Note: students taking other variations of the Liberal Studies Plan must take the 6 courses from the core studies plans of the BA.

Application for credit transfer

Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.
