Program Overview

The Bachelor of Informatics is an exciting degree with a wide range of specialisation areas which puts students at the cutting edge of the Information Age. The flexible program of study enables students to:

  • build on foundation studies in mathematics, statistics and computing
  • tailor their study in informatics and communication to meet their career needs.

Students will be able to design the program to satisfy entry requirements of professional societies (for example, associate membership of the Australian Computer Society, the professional body for information technology practitioners in Australia).

Students should note that a knowledge of senior mathematics is assumed in this course and that a sound achievement in senior mathematics is an entry requirement. Students who are unsure whether they have a sufficient mathematical background for the course are advised to contact the University’s Mathematics Learning Centre for guidance.

Program Structure

To obtain a Bachelor of Informatics, a student must complete a total of 24 courses as follows:

  • 6 compulsory courses in mathematics and computing;
  • one communication skills course;
  • at least one specialisation study area taken from within the Faculty; (subject to availability)
  • additional elective courses to bring the total for the degree to 24 courses. These courses may be selected so as to add greater depth to the specialisation areas of study. Up to 6 courses may be selected from any Faculty in the University so as to add greater breadth to the study program. (NB. No more than 10 level 1 courses may be credited towards the degree).

It is important to note that full-time students usually enrol in four courses per term and part-time students usually enrol in two courses per term per term.
