ENEC12004 Theory & Prac of Struc Des

Course Description

This course examines the capacity design principle and differentiates this approach from other limit state approaches, related the importance of BMD, SFDand AFD to structural design, identifies the various modes of failure of structural components made from concrete, steel and timber under compression, tension, bending moment and shear. The course aims to translate the student's knowledge on civil engineering materials and mechanics into the principle of structural design. Students examine the principal of beam design in general terms and apply it to reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and timber designs. Similarities and differences in design for the various materials will be covered. Also, the principle of column design will ge applied to reinforced conctete, prestressed concrete, steel adn timber designs.
