CHEM12019 Metals in Chemistry

Course Description

Offered Autumn term every even year. This course extends understanding of theoretical and applied metal and metal ion chemistry. Fundamentals of wave mechanics and the nature of atomic orbitals; relationship of orbitals and stereochemistry according to the valence-bond theory and the molecular orbital theory for simple molecules and coordination compounds; crystal field and ligand field theories, magnetic and spectral properties. Applications in bioinorganic chemistry (nature and medicine) and industrial inorganic chemistry. Distance education students will be required to attend a residential school for this course.
