Master of Midwifery CF45

Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time.
Mode: External only.
Fees: Full-fee paying.
Location(On-Campus): Not offered internally.
Courses/Units of Credit: 9 courses including research/80 units of credit.
Faculty: Arts, Health & Sciences.
Entry: Direct.
Accreditation: Pre-endorsement graduates are accredited by the Queensland Nursing Council for endorsement to practice as a midwife.
Practicum/Work Placement: 1032 hours of clinical practice.
Residential School: A residential is conducted at the commencement of Midwifery Practice A and Midwifery Practice B. Dates of residential schools are on page ---
Exit Awards: Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.

The structure of the initial 12 - 18 months of the program is the same as the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.

Students are then required to complete courses in research methodologies, health statistics and epidemiology, and write and present a dissertation in relation to midwifery theory and/or practice which has been approved by the course coordinator.

Entry

All applicants must be registered nurses, and their eligibility for the course will be assessed on a case by case basis.

International students are expected to comply with English language requirements and be registered as a general nurse in Queensland.

Program Objectives

On completion of the program students will be able to:

  • discuss contemporary issues in health care and women's health which affect the practice of midwifery;
  • assess the woman's needs and resources to provide information for individual decision-making in a supportive environment;
  • utilise childbirth in healthcare education and counselling practises for women, families and community groups;
  • empower women and their families to facilitate decision-making and respecting their decision regarding childbirth;
  • undertake all aspects of antenatal care for women with normal pregnancies;
  • recognise abnormalities as they arise and work with other health professionals, consulting and referring as necessary when the woman's need for care exceeds the competencies of the midwife;
  • provide safe care to the woman and her foetus/newborn utilising evidence-based midwifery practice;
  • implement continuity of care and support to women during normal labour and conduct deliveries;
  • participate and assist in research to continuously evaluate the quality of effectiveness of midwifery care;
  • demonstrate responsibility and accountability for their own professional development;
  • practise midwifery within the prescribed legal boundaries and their own scope of competence.

Program Structure

Students will follow a program of study that requires satisfactory completion of nine courses over two years of full-time study.

Pre-endorsement Students

Over 1000 hours of clinical practice is conducted in a variety of approved clinical areas including hospitals and community settings. Clinical practice will be arranged at approved hospitals.
