Course details
The Composition and Arranging courses cover composition and arranging in modern music styles with initial emphasis on jazz and song related styles as a foundation through to the exploration of more expansive forms and other popular styles. Reference is made to the place of various genres and forms in the development of jazz and popular music composition and arranging.
In Composition and Arranging 2 students, using the knowledge attained in Composition and Arranging 1, further develop their skills to contextualise this information in their study. Students will have access to composition material that will cover complex forms from song, blues and ethnic styles including groove, progressive and contemporary jazz structures. Arrangement studies range from presentation of lead sheets to part-writing for a range of large jazz and popular music ensembles. While students are expected to explore their own creativity and originality, due attention to rigor in the technical, musical and aesthetic aspects of the assigned tasks is required.
