Course details
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the technology of systems for the treatment and supply of portable water and for the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater. In recent decades, the development of urban areas incorporating centres of high population density and industrial plants has led to a growing awareness of the interrelationship between the essential community services of water supply and wastewater disposal and the protection of the quality of environmental waters. As a result, public health requirements and public demand for the preservation of environmental amenities impose increasingly high standards on water supply and wastewater disposal authorities in regard to the performance of their installations.
At the same time there are several hundred small towns and communities in Australia that have a reticulation supply with severe water quality problems and do not have a satisfactory domestic wastewater disposal systems.. Such situation threaten public health and can have adverse environmental implications including offensive odours, unsightly conditions and pollution of natural water bodies which receive the partially treated or untreated wastewater.
The professional responsibility for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of dams, storages, water and wastewater transmission systems and treatment facilities lies primarily with the civil engineering field. Technologists should obtain sufficient basic knowledge if they intend to work in this field of civil engineering profession. The course is organised in a traditional manner with water distribution and processing separated from wastewater collection and treatment.
