Privacy Act

Documents containing personal information are to be handled and protected in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Privacy Act 1988 which sets standards for the collection, storage, use and disclosure of, and access to, personal information. Personal information is to be disclosed only with permission of the individual to whom it relates or where the Privacy Act 1988 allows.

The Queensland government has developed the Queensland Information Standard 42: Information Privacy which is based on the eleven information privacy principles contained in the Federal Privacy Act 1988.

The Federal Privacy Act 1988 should be read in conjunction with the Freedom of Information Act 1992.
