Course details
This course examines the American Civil War in the context of the history not only of the United States of America but also of warfare itself. However, its major purpose is to explain why most historians consider it to have been the central event in American history. Major themes include the role of slavery in bringing about the conflict, both why the war lasted so long and why the North won, and the consequences of the outcome of the war for the United States in general and the South in particular.
