EDCU13016 Literacy In the Classroom

Course details

EDCU13016 Literacy in the Classroom addresses literacy education and pedagogy in primary schools in Queensland with a particular focus on literacy learning in the early years. It is grounded explicitly in current and sound language, teaching and learning theories. Having a sound and explicit theory of literacy and literacy learning enables effective literacy teachers to tailor their programs to meet the culturally and linguistically diverse needs of their students and easily justify what they do with literacy in their classrooms. This course is grounded explicitly in a socio-cultural theory of literacy - that is, literacy is not just a fixed set of skills, but a social practice. This theoretical stance has significant implications for what happens in classrooms.

Students will be required to draw on their practicum and experiences in lower primary classrooms throughout this course and should demonstrate sound literacy teaching strategies through authentic tasks that require them to work with a focus child. Those students who are studying externally will complete a module that focuses on teaching children with diverse literacy needs.
