Central Queensland University Campuses

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland which is known as the Sunshine State. It is a modern, growing city with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The city sits on the banks of the Brisbane River with a population of about 1.5 million people. Brisbane offers a subtropical climate and lends itself to outdoor lifestyles.

Brisbane International Campus is located in Margaret Street in the city centre and is host to approximately 700 international students from many different countries. Students are close to city transport and recreational facilities. It is a short distance from the picturesque Botanic Gardens, the State Library, the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, and SouthBank Parklands.

It is a unique purpose-built high-rise campus equipped with on-site accommodation. This campus offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs to full-fee-paying students. Bundaberg, with a district population of 90 000, is four hours drive north of Brisbane and has an ideal, subtropical climate. With safe beaches and reef diving less than 20 minutes away and several rivers within easy reach, it provides opportunities for students to participate in a range of water sports. The city is well supplied with playing fields and indoor sporting facilities and has a good range of restaurants and night spots.

Students may now complete full degrees in Arts, Aviation Technology, Business (Accounting), Business (Information Systems), Business Accounting/Information Systems, Business Administration, Business Administration/Professional Communication, Communication, E-Journalism, Electronic Commerce, Environmental Science, Informatics, Information Technology, Nursing and Nursing Informatics, Learning Management and Multimedia Studies.

First year studies are available in Biomedical Science, Business (Human Resources Management), Business (Management), Business (Marketing), Health Promotion/Health Education, Human Movement Science, Informatics, Occupational Health & Safety, Science with majors in Biology, Chemistry and Aquatic Resource Management and Tourism. With the exception of Learning Management, programs are available by full-time, part-time and distance education study.

The campus is located in a spacious bushland setting one kilometre from a large shopping mall. Facilities include a 200-seat and a 100-seat lecture theatre, bookshop, library, interactive videoconferencing equipment, teaching rooms, staff offices, campus refectory, four computer laboratories, clinical nursing laboratories and special facilities for electronically interactive lectures across all campuses. Two computer labs are accessible from 6.30 am to 2 am. Students are able to study and socialise in a friendly and safe environment where an active student committee has established several sporting clubs and organises other sports events, free film nights and a wide variety of social events.

CQU Gladstone is located on the marina adjacent to the central business district. It serves as a focal point for students who live in the Gladstone, Calliope and Miriam Vale regions.

The Campus has very active research programs operating from the Gladstone based Centre for Environment Management and the Process Engineering and Light Metals (PELM) centre.

Facilities include computer rooms (one with 24-hour access), a library with computer access to the CQU Rockhampton library, studios, bookshop, two 200-seat lecture theatres, classrooms, teleconferencing, two videoconferencing facilities, an Interactive System-Wide Learning Facility (ISL), students’ canteen and dining facilities located in the Gladstone Engineering Centre.

Postgraduate programs in Maintenance Management, Process Engineering and Environmental Management are offered by distance mode from CQU Gladstone.

Students studying by distance education are encouraged to use the facilities. Some tutorial classes for distance education students are also held at the campus. A wide variety of continuing education programs are offered. These include home study programs, as well as face-to-face programs for the business community and general public.

The campus offers the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) and Extended STEPS for mature age students preparing for university study.

The Mathematics Learning Centre also offers a short preparatory program,'Enabling Mathematics', for students entering any course with a quantitative component. The program is open to both school leavers and mature-age entrants and runs in the week prior to Orientation.

Situated within an hour of the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, CQU Mackay is the gateway to the heart of tropical Queensland. Mackay is surrounded by ancient rainforests, national parks and the reef, making it a wonderful recreational paradise.

Mackay city has a population of almost 80 000 with a regional population of around 120 000. The city thrives on the commerce of sugar, coal mining, beef, grain and tourism. Established at its Planlands site in 1992, CQU Mackay is a young and dynamic campus. Around 1300 students are enrolled at the campus in a wide variety of programs.

CQU Mackay is also home to the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM), which specialises in producing music performers of the highest calibre. The CQCM is housed in a new, purpose-built facility which boasts a 200-seat performance theatre as well as recording studios.

The Conservatorium presents a busy performance program featuring visiting international and Australian artists, and hosts annual conferences and seminars in such areas as composition, jazz, music theatre and instrumental performance. In common with conservatoria throughout the world, the CQCM is committed to the achievement of the highest standards in music, particularly through performance and composition, while developing the vocational needs of students who intend to become professional performing artists.

The incorporation of the CQCM with CQU Mackay makes for a unique educational setting. The campus offers full degrees in Arts, Business, Communication, Education, Information Technology, Jazz Studies, Multimedia, Music Theatre, Nursing, and Tourism. First year studies can be completed in Biology, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Health Promotion/Health Education, and Occupational Health and Safety.

The Hannah Drysdale Library houses an extensive collection of books and reference materials. It provides access to a wide range of databases via the Internet and CD-ROM. On-campus services include an Equity Contact Officer, a Nulloo Yumbah Support Officer, a Student Counsellor, a Student Association Liaison Officer and refectory facilities. The Student Association organises non-academic activities and support services. The Campus is an Open Learning Centre that supports distance education students in programs offered by CQU and other universities.

Skills for Tertiary Entrance Preparation Studies (STEPS) programs are also offered on-campus. These programs are designed to prepare students for university life as well as to assist students with study techniques, essay writing, time management and exam preparation. On-campus accommodation is also available through the Mackay Student Residential College. The environment at CQU Mackay is renowned for its student-friendly nature, balancing a high quality education with a close-knit community, which ultimately enhances campus life.

Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria, and the second largest city in Australia with over three million people. Melbourne offers a temperate climate and excellent transport systems. The trains, trams and buses make it simple to access the city sites, central business district and the suburbs beyond.

Accommodation, food and general living expenses are very reasonably priced. Melbourne is characterised by established communities from many cultures of the Asia-Pacific region as well as a wide variety of restaurants and international food stores.

Situated in a purpose-built high-rise building in Melbourne’s city heart, Melbourne International Campus is host to nearly 2000 full-fee-paying, local and international students. The campus boasts personalised tutorials and a Learning and Study Skills program to help all students for whom English is not a first language.

The campus facilities include modern lecture theatres, tutorial facilities, leading edge technologies and an electronic research library. CQU Melbourne also has borrowing rights with any Victorian university particpating in the National Borrowing Scheme. CQU Rockhampton is located in the world’s southern most tropical city. Rockhampton is an attractive regional city with a population of approximately 70 000, and is situated on the Fitzroy River and close to the Capricorn Coast and the Great Barrier Reef.

CQU Rockhampton has two precincts. The northern precinct is situated in large, attractive grounds on the north of the city. This precinct is surrounded by bushland but is also close to major amenities.

The University is administered centrally from Rockhampton, and the Chancellery, which houses the Senior Executive, is located here.

The southern precinct is located in Rockhampton’s central business district, with teaching conducted in some of Queensland’s most significant historical buildings.

CQU Rockhampton is the base for the University’s distance education activities, and hosts the University’s distance education centre.

Much of the University’s main research activities are conducted at CQU Rockhampton, which currently hosts the University’s research centres.

Most undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered in the on-campus mode by the University can be completed at CQU Rockhampton.

The Capricornia College, which provides residential accommodation for up to 350 students, is also located at this campus.

The campus’s comprehensive facilities include a large, modern library with audiovisual and computer support, numerous teaching and laboratory buildings and Student Association facilities, cafes and a post-office.

It is the site of a major sporting complex, including a pool, basketball courts, a baseball diamond and sporting fields.

CQU is one of Australia’s leading providers of quality distance education. The University has conducted many of its programs by distance education for over 20 years, and continually strives to improve its provision of flexible delivery through strategic and directed research in the area of open and distance learning.

The Division of Teaching and Learning Services (DTLS) assists Faculty staff in the design, development, production and delivery of flexible learning materials, and provides academic staff development, bridging programs and learning support to students.

The Division comprises a Multimedia Design Centre involved in the design and development of educational material, an Operations Unit which encompasses the preparation and distribution of study materials, and an Educational Services and Learning Support Unit which provides academic staff development, bridging programs and learning support to students. DTLS undertakes the printing and distribution of study materials to enrolled students and offers a range of administrative support services to staff and students enrolled by distance educaiton.

Study by distance education enables students to fit study into their lifestyles, as well as remaining enrolled in a tertiary program in the event of moving location. Students may transfer from on-campus to distance education study and vice versa dependent upon program rules. Students may also have the option of enrolling through a mixed mode which is a combination of on-campus and distance education study.

Some programs are only available in the distance education mode, and some are coordinated from campuses outside of Rockhampton.

Distance education courses use a variety of learning approaches. These may include teletutorials, videoconferencing, residential schools, and Internet tuition. Quality printed materials including Study Guides are provided to distance education students for each course of study.

Distance education students have access to the University’s on-campus facilities, including libraries and computer laboratories. Students wishing to access Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne International Campuses should contact these campuses directly.

CQU Campus Facilities

Post Office

An Australia Post shop is located at CQU Rockhampton (Commercial Centre). EFTPOS is available from the Student Association Shop and the BirdCage Bar at CQU Rockhampton; and at the Bookshop at CQU Mackay and Bundaberg.

Due to the inner city locations of CQU Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Brisbane International Campuses, students have easy access to all services.

Childcare

nGundanoo Imbabee is a childcare centre located in Darambal Road, (Ph: 07 4936 2748). There are a number of other childcare facilities in close proximity to the campus. Students should contact individual campuses to discuss childcare availability.

Eating

All campuses have a Student Association canteen or refectory. CQU Rockhampton, the largest campus, has a café/takeaway, an Asian takeaway, a Kebab shop, and a large Student Refectory. A bar and lounge are also features of the campus’s central Commercial Centre.

Due to the inner city locations of CQU Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Brisbane International Campuses, students have easy access to many cafés and eateries.

Parking

Free student parking is available at CQU Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Emerald and Mackay. Students must park their cars in designated areas, or towing may occur at the owner’s expense.

Due to the inner city locations of Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast and Melbourne International Campuses, students are advised to use public transport.

Shops

CQU Rockhampton hosts a hair salon and, a travel agency, as well as a bookstore.

Bookshop

CQU Bookshops stock a full range of textbooks, stationery, calculators, software, general reading and reference materials. A special order service is also available for both books and printed music. The Bookshops maintain a global database of books in print, benefiting those students seeking difficult to obtain reference material.

Bookshops are located at CQU Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone, and Mackay, as well as Brisbane, Fiji, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney International Campuses. A bookshop service is provided at Emerald.

A mail order service is provided for all items sold by the Bookshop and all distance education students receive a catalogue and order forms prior to each term. Distance education students are encouraged to submit their orders early to avoid frustrations caused by delays during the peak period of the first two weeks of each term.

CQU Bookshops are wholly owned by Central Queensland University and all profits are reinvested in the University.

Sports

CQU Rockhampton is host to the CQ Sports Complex, which contains a fully equipped gym, a swimming pool, undercover basketball/indoor soccer courts, and sportfields. The campus also hosts an international standard baseball field.

Sports at other campuses are organised by the Student Association. Contact the Student Association at each campus for further details.

Transport

CQU Rockhampton is serviced by regular bus routes throughout the city. The campus is also serviced by bicycle tracks.

CQU Bundaberg is served by regular city bus services within four bus routes during the morning and much of the afternoon each weekday.

Students at CQU Mackay, Gladstone and Emerald are advised to have their own transport.

CQU Sydney International Campus is located in the Sydney CBD and is within walking distance from Wyndham Station, and is well serviced by buses and monorail.

CQU Melbourne International Campus is located in Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD and is well serviced by trains, trams and buses.

CQU Brisbane International Campus is located in Margaret Street in the Brisbane CBD, and is well serviced by trains, ferries, and buses.

CQU Gold Coast International Campus is located in Marine Parade, Southport, and is well serviced by buses.
