Program Overview

This program is a double degree for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching with specialisation in secondary education. It provides students with the opportunity to develop as professional teachers through a comprehensive tertiary program and extensive practical experience in schools and the community. Curriculum subject areas are offered depending on availability of appropriate curriculum studies in the discipline degree and the availability of pedagogical studies in the Learning Management degree. This program enables preservice teachers to prepare themselves to teach a range of secondary school subjects including:

• Chemistry to Year 12;
• Multi-strand Science to Year 12;
• Science to Year 10;
• Mathematics to Year 12, or
• other second teaching area to Year 10.

Subject areas are offered depending on availability of discipline studies in that area.

Program Structure

To satisfy the requirements of the award, students must complete:

• 16 courses or 96 units of credit from the Bachelor of Science program;
• 4 courses or 24 units of credit in the second teaching area;
• 16 courses or 96 units of credit of professional education studies from the Bachelor of Learning Management (Secondary) program.

Note: Students intending to apply for teaching positions in the private sector may be required to show evidence of studies in religion.

Program Advice

Students enrolling in the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Learning Management (Secondary) should consult the Program Advisor, Bachelor of Science, no later than Orientation Week.

Application for Credit Transfer

Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been successfully completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.
