Career Opportunities
Diagnostic radiographers are responsible for providing safe and accurate imaging examinations in a wide range of clinical environments using a variety of imaging modalities and techniques so that appropriate management and treatment of patients and clients can proceed. They may function twenty four hours a day and have to be prepared for medical emergencies that may occur during examination and treatment. Radiographers require professional judgment to determine how to achieve the best diagnostic outcome while providing optimal patient care. Radiographers are involved with non invasive and interventional procedures, health surveillance screening and research. As this is a rapidly changing technological field, radiographers need to be adaptable and committed to life-long learning.
Radiographers are employed in public and private health systems and can be single handed or part of a large department. Career prospects in Queensland are excellent where an expanding and ageing population will keep demand high of the foreseeable future
About Medical Imaging
The Medical imaging Program is a four year undergraduate degree. It is fulltime and the academic component is based in the Mackay campus of the University. A total of 57 weeks of clinical education is carried out at diagnostic imaging departments and clinics located throughout Queensland. This time is divided into specific clinical courses with developing levels of expertise expected, leading to mastery in the final component. The design of the total program incorporates integrated learning as each stage of clinical will reflect those skills and knowledge taught in the preceding term. Graduates will be recognized as practitioners of the highest calibre, fully competent upon graduation, eligible for full accreditation from their professional bodies and who meet the needs of the local and national community. There is a distinct focus on the regional and rural community whilst ensuring graduates are fully conversant with the latest technology and well prepared to work flexibly and creatively in a rapidly changing technological environment. International exchange opportunities may be available at the student and faculty level.
