Course details
On completion of this course, students should be able to have knowledge and skills in orthodontics and prosthodontics as well as comprehension in the clinical ramifications of pharmacology. In the discipline of orthodontics, students will be able to judge classes of malocclusion, describe treatment options and explain the reasons necessitating orthodontic treatment; demonstrate the ability to take impressions for orthodontic purposes and derive a correct cephalometric tracing; and demonstrate skill in placing and fixing arch wires and removing brackets, bands arch wire, modules, ligature wire, elastic and separating elastics using appropriate instruments, equipment and techniques.
In the discipline of prosthodontics, students will be able to describe the management and use of fixed and removable prosthodontic appliances including implants.
In the field of pharmacology, students will be able to describe basic pharmacological concepts, and explain the clinical use and effects of the major classes of drugs used in dental treatment and drugs taken by patients, particularly poly-pharmacy, that may impact adversely on dental treatment and oral health. Students will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapy, contraindications and pain control. Lastly, students will be able to communicate oral health in oral and written formats in terms of relevant interpersonal/team communication skills and professional attitudes/behaviours.
