Course details
This course provides an introduction to the application of sustainability principles and practices to business. A sustainable business considers the effects of its operations on people, the planet, and profits; it also accounts for multiple stakeholders (and their values) and the importance of ethics in promoting economically, socially, and environmentally sound outcomes. We explore the fundamental principles of sustainability and how such concepts are applied to the business case, including the social/governance context (and ethical considerations) of sustainable business and the implications for core functional domains (such as marketing, finance, and accounting). The course also addresses sustainable business leadership tools and strategic approaches (such as authentic leadership, industrial ecology, systems analysis, green engineering, cradle-to-cradle, and footprint analysis) for effective decision-making. The emergence of regional and global institutions and policies that influence business practices and strategies (such as the UN Framework on Climate Change, Montreal Process, and carbon tax initiative) are discussed. Finally, case studies highlighting the role of sustainable business in addressing regional and global challenges (such as climate change, biodiversity loss, Global Financial Crisis, social inequity) are emphasised.
