Course details
This course examines the ecology of natural and agricultural systems, introducing the concept of agricultural systems as managed ecosystems and highlighting the effects of agricultural practices on and off farm. The course will cover interactions between managed and natural ecosystems and the principles of landscape ecology will be introduced. Agricultural production systems will be examined as functioning ecosystems, emphasising the properties which contribute to stability and productivity. Key steps in the development of modern agricultural systems will be examined and used to highlight differences in the ecology of managed and natural systems.This will provide the theoretical basis for an understanding of agricultural sustainability issues.
The practical component of the course will demonstrate core field techniques required by scientists working in natural and managed ecosystems. There will be a compulsory residential school for distance education students.
