Course details
Hydraulics introduces the analysis of hydrostatic and buoyancy effects and analysis of flow pipe systems and in open channels. Students use knowledge of fundamental properties of fluids to analyse problems involving static and moving fluids. Students analyse and design pipe systems and networks, and open channels and related hydraulic structures. The course presents methods for calculating energy and surface profiles in open channel flow, the operation and selection of pumps and turbines, and the use of similitude principles for modelling hydraulic effects. It requires students to learn to work autonomously and emphasises the importance of clear, professional documentation of the approach taken in analysis of hydraulics problems.
Some of the learning outcomes are satisfactorily achieved through a compulsory residential school. The residential school may be after the date for certification of results for the course. In the event that a student is in a position to pass the course subject to performance in the residential school the student will receive an interim (temporary) grade PO (practicum outstanding). This will be converted to a final grade when the requirements of the residential school have been satisfactory completed
