SPCH14001 Complex Disorders in Speech Pathology

Course details

This course provides students with the theoretical knowledge to begin to understand the complex nature of intervention frequently presenting in clients with communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. Students will be provided with cases, task-based and other learning opportunities that introduce them to the broad and diverse parameters of communication and swallowing disorders in Australian and international contexts. Evidence-based speech pathology research and practice are reviewed regarding appropriate evaluation and intervention approaches. Students are assisted to plan appropriate intervention in partnership with families and other professional groups. Emphasis is placed on understanding the theory, principles and practice of applying multimodal communication solutions for individuals with complex communication needs. Students' professional growth is supported through the development of basic counselling skills as these apply to the initial diagnostic interview, taking the case history, responses to speech pathology interventions and specific issues amenable to counselling as these may affect the communication or swallowing disorder outcomes.
