Course details
Interpretations of Art introduces the study of art history by focusing on a number of artworks from various cultures and time periods, including Australian, Indigenous and contemporary art. The student will learn to read different interpretations of visual art, which will include those shaped by social contexts, cultures, historical situations and concepts of aesthetics. The varieties of approaches taken by art historians and theorists will be analysed along with the approaches to ‘value’ as assessed by public galleries, museums, collectors and the art market. Interpretations of Art encourages students to seek lifelong enjoyment and inspiration from the rich heritage of art works, past and present, that express the ideas, observations, values and beliefs of humanity. Opportunities will be sought for students to access art works in their local galleries and other art collections, for experience in art interpretation.
