Course details
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the study of spoken language, covering basic principles of phonetics and phonology, with an emphasis on spoken English. The also course provides an introduction to a number of related fields, including the acquisition of phonology in first and second languages, how languages change over time as well as social and dialectic variation. It also deals with the psychological and neurological bases of human language functions (aphasia) and how language is organised in the brain, from the study of acquired language disorders. The course emphasises the acquisition of practical skills of phonetic transcription and linguistic analysis, useful for speech pathologists, language teachers and those intending to take advanced courses in linguistics.
