Students must complete 24 courses/144 units of credit, which include:

• 20 core courses; and
• a second plan consisting of 4 courses (see co-plans listed below).

These co-plans have been selected to provide students with guidance in selecting a group of subjects that may assist in their career progression.  These co-plans are approved, but they are optional.  If a suitable combination of subjects is not available, please contact your Program Advisor via eForm to discuss customising a suite of courses to suit your needs or call the Student Contact Centre on 13 27 86 to get your Program Advisor to contact you.

A combination of courses other than these approved co-plans specified below will not show as a specialisation on your degree.

Co-plan description: Recommended for those students looking for a career within occupational health and safety, a career with very high wages and in very high demand.  Opportunities exist for graduates in management/consultancy and practice of workplace health and safety including ergonomics, industrial safety officer, occupational hygienist and risk management.  Students who complete this co-plan will be eligible to graduate with a certificate in OHS.  Graduates may also qualify for the Workplace Health and Safety Officer Certificate awarded by the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations and the Workplace Rehabilitation Coordinator Certificate accredited by Q-Comp.

Co-plan description: Provides students with theoretical and practical skills for employment in fields related to ecologically sustainable development.  The co-plan develops practical skills to solve environmental problems and provides an appreciation of the roles of environmental planning, environmental law and advocacy and lays the foundations for students to effectively communicate with environmental stakeholders.  An increasing number of positions are becoming available in the areas of Safety, Health and the Environment with large industries including mining.

Co-plan description: Environmental health is an important health issue in Indigenous communities. This co-plan is recommended for those students with an interest in working with Indigenous Australians.

Co-plan description: Provides students with skills and knowledge to prepare graduates to enforce, advise and interpret laws and regulations controlling residential and low-rise commercial buildings and work for local government, state and federal authorities including licensing and code boards and private certifiers. Students intending to work in New South Wales, where EHOs are often involved in building-related activities should consider this co-plan.

Co-plan description: For students with an interest in the management, marketing or human resource management side of EH who will be better served in their EH careers by acquiring an understanding of a wide range of business areas and operations.  It gives you the opportunity to obtain broad-based skills in a business environment.  It will help equip you with a sound skills base regarding business operations within Australia and overseas and lead to careers in EH management, marketing, human resource management and operations management.

Co-plan description: Public relations is a function of modern management.  It is relevant to community affairs and government as well as to the corporate sector.  In the contemporary world, organisations depend on public relations professionals to devise and implement strategies for effective employee relations, crisis management, and maintenance of an appropriate public profile.  This co-plan aims to assist the EH student to obtain skills and knowledge in public relations.

Co-plan description: Provides students with skills and knowledge to work with engineers, technologists and business managers in an enormous range of industries and organisations in both government and private industry - Business manager level. It helps equip you to apply knowledge and skills in analysis, scientific, technological and management principles and to exhibit management skills and social responsibility to existing and new technology and business areas.  BOHS students who may be interested in working in an engineering, applied technology or related area would find the study of the this co-plan beneficial, with its introduction to technical and socio-technical issues and the management and application of technology in an engineering workplace.
