Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Theatre (Specialisation) is designed for students seeking a profession in the entertainment industry as an actor, musical theatre performer or as part of the theatre production team. The program includes opportunities to gain the professional skills necessary for a performing arts industry career as a performer, director, designer, theatre technician or theatre manager. The degree also provides excellent pathways for careers in education, creative industries and arts administration.

About Theatre (Specialisation)

The Bachelor of Theatre (Specialisation) includes specialisations in music theatre, drama and technical theatre. This program requires three years of full-time or six years of part-time study to complete. The program is unique in Queensland in that all specialisations are offered within the same, purpose-built space. Although there are three pathways through the program, the degree itself maintains a carefully designed cohesion and integrated structure, thereby maximising opportunities for cross-collaboration, production work and community engagement.

Music theatre (Mackay only)

Designed predominantly for students wishing to pursue a professional career in music theatre, the music theatre specialisation focuses on expert tuition in voice, acting and dance (ballet, tap and jazz). The specialisation includes individual tuition in voice; classes in acting with particular reference to music theatre styles; classes in dance: ballet, tap and jazz; master-classes and workshops in voice, acting and dance; opportunities for performance in fully-staged musicals directed by industry professionals; development of professional audition technique; technical theatre studies including stage management, lighting and sound design, scenic stage design and directing; academic studies in the history of western theatre and dramatic literature; history of western art music and popular music of the 20th century; introduction to music theory and the development of aural musicianship skills.

Significant performance opportunities exist as part of the program including two fully staged musical theatre productions each year and performances as part of community outreach initiatives within the Central Queensland region. International exchange opportunities are also available in the USA and Europe. We continue to investigate and build partnerships with theatre training providers and theatre companies throughout the world and especially throughout the Asia-Pacific rim.

Drama (Mackay only)

At CQUniversity we have a firm conviction that training in the craft of acting involves the acquisition of core qualities in voice and movement as part of the development of primary acting skills. In addition to encouraging vocal and physical flexibility, the program provides you with opportunities to explore and develop your imagination and performance skills through a wide variety of theatre productions. The specialisation includes classes in acting to cover a broad range of acting styles and genres for both stage and screen; the development of professional audition technique; technical theatre studies including stage management, lighting and sound design, scenic stage design and directing; academic studies in the history of western theatre and dramatic literature.

Technical Theatre (Mackay only)

The 2012 expansion of the existing theatre facilities to include a scene workshop, costume area, design studio and audio/video production lab has led to the development of a specialisation in technical theatre. Providing an opportunity to those students whose primary interest is in areas of theatre production rather than performance, this specialisation involves an augmented study of stage and production management, lighting, sound, set construction, design and technical direction. Students will play a practical role in supporting a wide variety of theatre productions with a natural progression to positions of increased responsibility and leadership. In addition students will undertake academic studies in the history of western theatre and dramatic literature.
