Course details
This course will equip you with an understanding of how communities and citizens can effectively engage in governing a sustainable future and effecting change in local and/or regional development policies and planning. The intent is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to become a thoughtful and productive citizen; one who can practice the ideals of justice, equality, and mutual respect in decisions concerning regional sustainable development. Each student will be required to (1) complete a voluntary field experience (service-learning activity) with a local or regional community organisation (public agency, not-for-profit/volunteer organisation, or private business) operating in an area related to sustainability and (2) participate in a series of lectures and tutorials concerning community engagement in regional sustainability. The lectures will include the theory, methodology and ethics of community engagement as a basis for understanding the politics of sustainable development; the role of business, government, and other organisations and stakeholders in shaping sustainable regional outcomes; and case studies of sustainability issues in regional Australia, examining how communities are engaged in decisions about these issues (such as development pressures in resource communities; environmental, social, and economic impact assessments; sustainable natural resource management; regional economic development and viability; and regional innovation systems).
