Course details
The competent management of drug therapy is integral to the role of the nurse and nursing practice. Understanding the principles of medication therapy, how medication work, physiological responses, safety issues and quality use of medicine is essential in meeting the specific needs of each client. Students should be able to critically examine the role of the nurse in preparing and administering medications and other therapeutic substances with an emphasis on safety and best practice. In addition, students should be able to discuss the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of common medications. Finally student should be able to critique best practices for safe administration of medication and other therapeutic substances (oxygen, blood, blood products and parenteral nutrition) including proper use of related devices.
Participation in the clinical laboratories is compulsory for internal students and participation in the residential school is compulsory for flex students.
