Course details
The subject will introduce the student to concepts and knowledge needed to effectively care for childbearing women, children, adolescents and families. Using primary health care, health promotion and health education frameworks the student will be encouraged to critically analyse the concept of family health and the issues that may influence the family. The student should be able to display knowledge and understanding of the physical and psychological changes that occur during pregnancy and early childhood, along with the role of the nurse in supporting women and their family during pregnancy, childbirth and early childhood. Health issues relevant to the adolescent, including mental health and drug use will be examined, as will the principles associated with loss and grief in the maternal/child health context and ethico-legal issues related to women, children, adolescences and families.
