About Midwifery
The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery program is offered as a postgraduate diploma leading to registration as a midwife. There are 10 courses offered in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery. The program follows the health care continuum of the pregnant woman including pre-pregnancy, antenatal care, childbirth, and parenting, postnatal and specialised care needs of young infants. Within the care continuum for low risk women the primary care giver is the midwife. The midwife works in and across a broad range of settings and makes a significant contribution to the wider public health agenda. The philosophy and conceptual framework of the program reflect the relationship between midwifery metaparadigms (woman, wellness/health, environment and midwife) and clinical skills in achieving a graduate who is a successful professional midwife and who is fit for practice
The study program encapsulates the knowledge and skills for the student to meet the requirements of the registering body and strives to meet state, national and international standards of midwifery practice.
There are 10 courses offered in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery where the theoretical content integrates with clinical practice. Each theory course will be introduced at a residential school and the relevant clinical skills and clinical attributes that relate to that learning will be demonstrated and practiced in a simulated environment prior to the student progressing each stage of clinical practice.
The progressive nature of clinical experience aims to provide learning opportunities for the student to foster partnerships with childbearing women and to be able to recognise the essence of continuity of care The diverse clinical experience aims to provide exposure in most areas of maternity services including rural and community based clinics.
The clinical component is designed to extend over 18 months of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery. The student who works within a complex maternity facility can fulfil the clinical requirement of 1082 hours for Graduate Diploma by working 3 days/week in the clinical area and attending Residential School along with undertaking a cultural/rural placement. Students working the majority of their clinical placement in non complex environment can choose to attend complex experiences in blocks that are mutually convenient to the facility and the student. These students can achieve their continuum of practice in noncomplex facilities by working 2.5 days per week. Student vacation periods maybe aligned with university closure or as negotiated.
