DGTL12002 Working with Social Media

Course details

This course investigates multimedia based digital interactive media and the tools and interaction models for creating and enhancing online social networks. Current and emerging communication and collaboration technologies, such as blogs, wikis, vidcasting and viral programs influence the creation, storage and exchange of information about individuals and groups. Special attention is given to the manner in which the design, adoption and communicative use of these technologies is shaped by the (i) characteristics of the technology, (ii) social and ethical practices, (iii) economic considerations, and (iv) policy issues.
A secondary focus of the course is on ubiquitous computing - mobile phones, PDAs etc - which offer new possibilities for enriched social interactions, particularly in terms of individual identity expression and management, urban tribes, social networks and the transparent consumer.
