Course details
On completion of the course, students should be able to understand the nature of the dependencies between human users and aquatic ecosystems and the underlying causes of differences in water availability between water "rich" and water "poor" nations. They should also demonstrate a knowledge of the geopolitics and hydro-politics associated with water and with international river basins, and the causes of conflicts over water. Students should be able to distinguish the social aspects of water, the causes of different attitudes to water, and the ethical issues associated with access to water and be able to analyse the water market and global trends in water ownership, water trading and decision making. They should be able to list the fundamental principles of planning for the sustainable use of water and identify international examples of water management.
