Students should be able to demonstrate beginning level competence in the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Competencies for Registered Nurses within a peri-operative setting. This course builds upon prior surgical nursing knowledge to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the peri-operative nurse. Students should be able to analyse environmental and patient safety in relation to the operating theatre suite and the principles of hazard minimization, application of infection control principles within the operating theatre and the legal and professional principles underpinning documentation protocols relevant to the peri-operative area.

Participation in compulsory clinical placement should provide students with a suitable learning environment to meet the course objectives. Participation in the residential school is compulsory for flex students.
