COMM12117 New Media Arts

Course details

In this course students will discuss, examine, analyze and critically reflect on a range of art works within new media environments. They will learn to recognize defining features and affects of new media art, as well as the underlying conceptual issues that they raise. Such issues will include embodiment/disembodiment, the virtualisation of experience, disjunctive proximity. These issues will be raised in terms of a digital aesthetics, and how it differs from previous aesthetic experiences. The course will also place new media art within an historical context, seeking points of contact with earlier forms as well as points of difference. Students will be able to create their own art forms in the light of the concepts and issues raised throughout the course.
