Course details
This course is founded upon the premise that students have a foundational knowledge of nursing skills gained either in the first year of the nursing program or from credit achieved as a result of recognition of prior learning. Students will develop the knowledge and demonstrate the skills to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and accurately document and communicate the nursing management of the acute client. The student will show through systematic data collection and the application of critical thinking incorporating evidence based practice, competent nursing management for clients within the acute nursing environment. This includes the ability to identify and link pathophysiology, biopsychosocial assessment data and diagnostic procedures of common conditions to the client's status in the acute nursing environment and to utilize all stages of the nursing process to enhance assessment skills. Students should also be able to critically examine the relationship between physical, mental and social health in the acute client, demonstrate the skills necessary to work within a multidisciplinary team and recognize that membership of this team is not restricted to health care professionals. Participation in the clinical laboratory sessions is compulsory for internal students and in the residential school for flex students.
