Course details
This course introduces concepts of surface mining technology.
Surface mining methods considered include open pit mining, strip mining, alluvial mining, quarrying and dredging. Starting from the definition of the economic resource, the mine planning processes are progressed from block identification to access selection and overburden and coal (or ore) production schedules. Equipment selection is considered in relation to productivity and effectiveness. Concepts are introduced in relation to drilling and blasting, rock breaking and slope stability.
Land clearing, rehabilitation and other environmental management issues are considered. Risk management and health and safety are considered as key elements in the planning and operations processes.
