Course details
Students in this course should develop a comprehensive knowledge of the formal structures underpinning song and scene construction from the perspective of the major composers of the period through a comprehensive investigation of songs, underscore, mis-en-scene and recitative in Musical Theatre from the 1930s to the end of the 1970s. Examples from a selection of musicals will be used to demonstrate how narrative flow is informed and reconciled through the interactions between music and lyrics. Through analysis, students demonstrate the key issues of dramaturgical problem solving; through the matching of linguistic devices to musical form as explicated predominantly through the 32-bar song form.
Some components of this course will be delivered in workshop format. Students will be required to attend these to complete the course.
