Career Opportunities
Graduates in Applied Biology will have the expertise to enter into a wide range of relevant employment fields, including public health and medicine, universities, national parks, agriculture, conservation and environmental management. Graduates in Industrial Chemistry are qualified for employment in areas as diverse as chemical and material production, agriculture, medicine, mining and metals, power industry, environmental science and ecology, food technology and forensic analysis, as well as careers in research and development in the private and public sector. The Industrial Chemistry program is fully accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. High achieving graduates can also undertake one further year of full-time study to complete an honours degree in their chosen area of specialisation and may then go on to further postgraduate study, e.g. PhD.
About Science
Applied Biology
Biology is the scientific study of all living organisms, including human beings. It includes botany, zoology, microbiology, marine science, biochemistry and ecology. Biology is also a discipline with a broad range of applications that affect many areas of human activity. If you are interested in the fundamental questions of life, and in applying your knowledge to improve the quality of our lives and our environment, then this degree program may be for you.
Within this program, students take a set of first year courses in biological, chemical and environmental sciences that provides the foundation for a range of advanced courses in second and third year that draw on the vocational and research strengths of the University, in areas such as aquatic biology, plant and microbial ecology and natural resource management.
Industrial Chemistry
Chemistry is the scientific study of the composition, properties and reactivity of matter at the atomic and molecular level. Chemistry is a discipline with a very wide range of practical and industrial applications, and plays a key role in modern life. Students who choose this program will study the fundamental principles of chemical sciences and develop their understanding of the significance of chemistry to human society.
Within this program, students take a set of first year courses in chemical, biological and environmental sciences that provides the foundation for a range of advanced courses in second and third year, where there is a strong emphasis on analytical/forensic chemistry and modern instrumentation techniques, complemented by through laboratory/practical and research project work. This combination of hands-on experience and practical training leads to excellent employment prospects on completion of the degree program.
