Course details

This course introduces students to professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for team work, self and team management. Students develop learning skills and are involved in problem solving, research, and the use of information and communication technologies. The course introduces students to modelling/simulation tools, common engineering materials, manufacturing processes, principles of workplace health and safety, and project risk assessment. The socio-technical role of the professional engineer, the nature of engineering design, and uses of fundamental "engineering language" in context are included in this course.
Part-time/distance education students starting the program should study this course first because it develops important generic engineering skills. Distance education (FLEX) students must attend a one-week residential school conducted during the first week of term. They are required to have access to a computer and to make frequent use of the Internet.
