Course details
This course is an intermediate acting course that focuses on classical acting techniques commonly required in presenting the works of Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles. Through the exploration of choruses, monologues and scenes from selected texts, students will develop an understanding of the physical control required and the flexibility in oral interpretation needed to bring works in this genre to life on the stage. This work will be supplemented by studies in the history and use of masks to subvert naturalism of the actor: their use in myths, rituals and carnival as evidenced in the theatre work of the European avant-garde, as well as Brecht, Grotowski and Brook. These concurrent investigations will be introduced within the 'Actors Studios' environment where students can take risks as performers without the pressure of production roles.
