CULT20026 The Popular Music of Indigenous Peoples in Australia

Course details

This course focuses on Indigenous Australians’ popular music as an integral component of the ‘identity narrative’ of contemporary Australia.
Students will undertake a survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander popular music and explore and analyse how it has evolved, the issues it addresses and the aims and aspirations of writers, composers, performers and producers.

The course aims to provide students with conceptual and analytical skills useful for appreciating the role of Indigenous Australian’s popular music in Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, which can be extrapolated to other nation-states with Indigenous populations.
