CULT20025 "World Music" as Culture, Commerce and Creativity

Course details

This course focuses on the genre of ‘world music’ as a key component of the transnational popular music industry. Via readings and listenings, students will undertake an examination of its origins and explore and analyse how it has been culturally produced and conceptualised in different cultures and in Australia.

The course helps students consider critically the nature of ‘world music’ as a unique genre and inclusive marketing category, how and by whom it is produced and consumed and how its production and reception mirror developments and debates in other creative arts.
