This course builds understandings about young children’s development and learning in the early years (birth to 3 years). It explores the importance of relationships, communication and nurturance for working with children of this age and their families. Strategies for building collaborative partnerships within early childhood education and care settings and their communities are identified. The course also emphasises the arts as fundamental for the development of young children’s ways of knowing and being. The arts contribute to the development of creativity, problem solving and imagination in young learners, which have been identified as essential attributes for life-long learning.
