The environment has become the focus of activities by communities, large corporations, schools and government at all levels. The environment in the broader sense includes natural ecosystems, the workplace, urban and regional areas, farms, river catchments, mines and manufacturing facilities. Environmental issues are not just a source of news but also a source of employment.

The first few decades of this millennium will see ongoing emphasis on ecological, social and economic sustainability and environmental management.

Studies in environmental science provide students with a grounding in ecological sustainability and are based upon a holistic understanding of the science of environmental problems and processes; development of practical skills to solve environmental problems; and appreciation of the roles of environmental planning, environmental law and advocacy. They lay the foundations for graduates to effectively communicate with stakeholders in diverse areas.

Studies in this area encompass many aspects of sustainable land and water resource utilisation providing students with an understanding of the multiple meanings of sustainability; the concepts and theories employed when evaluating sustainable options; recognition of the diversity of models and options relating to sustainable development; and an ability to think systemically and holistically about natural resource management and social and economic development.

A revised Bachelor of Environmental Science program commences from 2006. Students enrolled before 2006 will be able to complete their program as per their enrolment. Existing students may also undertake the new program as long as they meet the requirements of that program.  Students enrolled from 2006 will take the revised program. Students currently in 1st year of the program will be able to enrol in the new plans from 2006.
