Course details
This course will introduce hydrology and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of waters, and introduce and discuss the significance of major pollutants. The hydrology component ncludes such issues as the hydrological cycle, measurement of rainfall and run-off, making predictions and estimating risks based on meteorological and hydrological data, and principles underlying construction of control systems such as retention ponds. Physical and chemical aspects will include study of the interactions between light and the aquatic environment, and stratification and mixing processes in relation to dissolved gases and nutrients. Biological aspects will include study of algal blooms, macroinvertebrates as water quality indicators, and the role of fish and water plants. Water quality criteria will be discussed. The major anthropogenic influences on aquatic systems will be discussed with an emphasis on the management of freshwater systems. Residential school for distance education students.
