Course details
Local History & Heritage introduces students to a popular, specialised area of the History discipline in the study of local history in an Australian context. The course examines the emergence of this genre of historical investigation, its nature and methodology and explores how local history is shaped by the physical, economic, socio-cultural and political contexts of a particular geographical setting as well as reflecting themes of national history. The course also provides an introduction to heritage studies in considering the meaning of ‘heritage’ and providing some basic skills for researching, reading and documenting the historical significance of a local building, cultural site or landscape in such contexts as a heritage listing application or an environmental planning assessment. Students will be required to visit local archives and undertake some fieldwork associated with their chosen research project.
