Course details
Roads and railways have formed an integral part of the transportation system for several hundred years. However, their importance has risen dramatically in the last 100 years due to the development of the motorcar and high-speed trains. Most transportation networks have evolved slowly over time which has caused considerable planning difficulties. Modern networks have been planned and developed with regard to population distribution and environmental considerations. The purpose of this unit is to develop skills and understanding in topics related to planning, design and construction of roads and railways, covering: Data acquisition and analysis; Design of geometric and cross-sectional elements; Design and construction of structural elements; Environmental impact.
