CHEM12017 Industrial Chemistry

Course details

Offered Winter term every even year.
Material and energy balances. Fluid flow. Agitation and mixing of liquids. Heat transfer. Separation processes; filtration, distillation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, settling, centrifugation, electrostatic precipitation. Process development and control.
Types of minerals of important metals, ore dressing, hydrometallurgical concentration of minerals including froth floatation and cyanidation. Reduction and refining methods. Applications in processing of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, aluminium, uranium, titanium, iron and steel. Limestone and magnesite mining and conversion. Coal mining and preparation, blending and testing.Distance education students will be required to attend a residential school for this course.
